Wiarton Ontario Visited

“Wiarton  is a community in Bruce County, Ontario, at the western end of Colpoys Bay, an inlet off Georgian Bay, on the Bruce Peninsula. The community is part of the town of South Bruce Peninsula, Ontario.

Wiarton is known for the Wiarton Willie Festival, in February each year, when national and international media cover Wiarton Willie and his Groundhog Day prediction.” Source ~ Wikipedia

The road to the tip of the Bruce Peninsula and to Tobermory runs right through downtown Wiarton. It give travels the opportunity to discover this “basecamp to the Bruce Peninsula“!

Wiarton is the perfect stopping point to refresh travels who are traveling to Tobermory or further, to Manitoulin Island.

Wiarton’s  many shops and restaurants reflect the versatility of this historic community.

If you travel to Wiarton for one of its numerous festivals or activities and want to stay overnight, there are a number of accommodations to choose from.

Wiarton’s War Memorial honours those who fought and died in the two World Wars.

One of the best places to discover and have fun is the Bluewater Park. The beautiful park is located on the shores of Colpoy’s Bay (part of Georgian Bay).

Signs lead you to Wiarton’s waterfront and to Bluewater Park. Once there, it’s hard not to have a great time! 

Our first discovery was Wiarton Willie, the albino groundhog weather “guru“. Actually, it wasn’t the “live” Willie, it was the Willie “statues” in the Bluewater Park Splashpad. The Bluewater Park has a number of “Willie statues” located around the park, dedicated to the “famous weather predictor“!. Gary and I enjoyed being photographed with “Willie”.

Bluewater Park is beautiful in the summer, lush colourful gardens, the blue waters of Colpoy’s Bay and the far-off cliffs of the Niagara Escarpment.

Wiarton’s Bluewater Park offers visitors a unque campground setting. The campground is located on Colpy’s Bay and allows “seasonal overnight and tenting“.

Across Colpoy’s Bay, we can see Wiarton Marina. It’s summer time and the marina is filled with motor and sail boats. The marina is “nestled under the protective cliffs of the Niagara Escarpment“.

“The  Wiarton area is surrounded by nature. Georgian Bay provides visitors with endless water experiences, and the surrounding parks & conservation areas means there are endless options for hiking and nature gazing. The area is renowned for its wildflowers & orchids, and there are some fantastic gardens in the area to visit. The famous Bruce Trails runs through the waterfront of Wiarton – following it north from Bluewater Park – you can take a lovely hike to Spirit Rock Conservation Area. There is a mountain bike park located 10 minutes north of Wiarton – it is a great place to spend the day! In winter – the village is alive with snowmobilers – who come to this area to experience the great snowmobile trails that run north and south of Wiarton. There are some excellent ski trails nearby – some groomed or choose to ski or snowshoe on the Bruce Trail.”
