The Chatsworth Fall Fair, set to unfold on September 14th, 2024, offers a day packed with traditional fun and exciting competitions, celebrating the community’s agricultural roots and craftsmanship. This one-day event is a perfect family outing, featuring a variety of activities that cater to all ages, emphasizing hands-on experiences and friendly competition.

The Chatsworth Fall Fair begins with a delightful Breakfast Buffet, welcoming visitors with a spread of local favorites and hearty dishes to fuel a day of activities and exploration. This communal meal sets a friendly, neighborly tone for the day, giving families, friends, and visitors a chance to mingle and share in the excitement.

For the younger attendees, the Kid Zone is an area dedicated to child-friendly fun, including games, crafts, and interactive displays. It’s designed to keep the little ones engaged and entertained throughout the day, ensuring that families with children have a memorable and enjoyable visit. One of the highlights in this area is the Children’s Pedal Tractor Race, a much-anticipated event that gives kids the chance to participate in a thrilling dash, pedaling miniature tractors in a race to the finish line.

Another unique feature of the Chatsworth Fall Fair is the Lawn Tractor Rodeo, an event that combines skill and humor, as participants navigate lawn tractors through a challenging obstacle course. This event not only provides entertainment but also showcases the driving skills of the competitors in a fun and unusual way.

The Chatsworth Fall Fair also revives traditional skills with the Old Fashion Log Sawing and Nail Driving Competition, where participants can test their strength and precision. These competitions hark back to the days of pioneer living and offer a hands-on historical experience.

Additionally, the Zucchini Spectacular is a standout event where gardeners and chefs alike display their creativity. Participants bring their largest, most unusually shaped, or artistically decorated zucchinis to compete for prizes, adding a quirky and educational twist to the fair.

History of Agricultural Fairs

Fairs are almost as old as recorded history. There were two types of ancient fairs: trade shows and festivals. From the biblical “Fairs of Tyre” to Sturbridge Fair in medieval England, fairs were used as market places and carnivals. In the 1700’s the British crossed the agricultural improvement society with the traditional trade fair/carnival and agricultural fairs were born.

These agricultural fairs were transplanted to the colonies by the earliest British settlers. The concept of fairs soon flourished in agrarian North America. In Canada, the first agricultural society was formed in 1765 in Nova Scotia. Ontario followed suit in 1792 with the Agricultural Society of Upper Canada based at Niagara on the Lake. From the Ontario strongholds, the concept of agricultural fairs spread west with the first settlers.

After a few false starts, the system of agricultural societies and their fairs spread all over Ontario in the 1800’s. They were organized by county and township and at one time numbered over 500 in Ontario alone. While agricultural societies used many methods (of varying success) to improve agriculture and the rural lifestyle, they’re most enduring and endearing legacy was the agricultural fair. Industrial exhibitions and festivals came and went, but the fairs just carried on. Fairs soon became an ingrained part of Ontario’s (and indeed Canada’s) culture. They still are, in our society.

Ontario Fairs have changed since their inception, but they still carry on their mandate of promoting agriculture and the rural lifestyle.
