Toronto Star lists Crees in the Caribbean as a must-see show this summer!
We’re thrilled to share that Crees in the Caribbean, the second production of Lighthouse Festival’s 2026 summer season, has been featured as one of the Toronto Star’s 10 road trip-worthy theatre shows to see in Ontario this summer.
And honestly? We think they’re onto something.
Written by celebrated Canadian playwright Drew Hayden Taylor, Crees in the Caribbean is a witty, warm-hearted comedy about Evie and Cecil Poundmaker, a Cree couple celebrating their 35th wedding anniversary with their very first trip abroad: a Mexican resort vacation gifted by their children.
What follows is a hilarious fish-out-of-water adventure packed with awkward excursions, resort culture shocks, sunburns, misunderstandings, and decades of married banter that audiences will instantly fall in love with. Beneath the laughs is a touching story about love, identity, and rediscovering one another after 35 years together.
Drew Hayden Taylor is one of Canada’s most celebrated Indigenous playwrights and storytellers, known for blending humour and heart in works that explore contemporary Indigenous experiences with honesty and warmth. His plays have been produced across the country, and his unmistakable voice has made him a favourite among Canadian theatre audiences.
If you’re planning your summer theatre adventures, this is one road trip worth taking.
