Waterfront Neighbourhood Centre Celebrates 35th Anniversary

TORONTO, ON – The Waterfront Neighbourhood Centre (WNC) is proud to celebrate 35 years of delivering accessible programs, services, and community support for residents of Toronto’s waterfront. Located at 627 Queens Quay W., WNC provides programs for babies to seniors in one of Toronto’s most unique and fast-growing neighbourhoods.
Toronto’s waterfront in the nineties looked very different than it does today. It was mostly industrial land with only a few waves of residential development. Today, it’s one of the fastest-growing vertical neighbourhoods in the city and WNC has grown alongside it.
“Thirty-five years ago, WNC was founded with a simple mission, to be a welcoming place for all. Three and a half decades later, we are so proud of what our staff, volunteers, board, and participants have contributed, and we are more energized than ever about what comes next,” said Natasha Francis, Executive Director of the Waterfront Neighbourhood Centre.
Since opening its doors in 1991, the centre has celebrated many milestones.
- WNC began serving the community in a 2,500 sq. ft. facility with 10 programs, 12 staff, and 74 volunteers delivering 3,000 hours of service in its first year.
- WNC moved into its current 30,000 sq. ft. home at 627 Queens Quay W. in October 1997, which also houses a daycare and Waterfront Public School.
- Rebranded from Harbourfront Community Centre to Waterfront Neighbourhood Centre in 2016 to mark its 25th anniversary, approved by Toronto City Council.
- WNC’s outdoor basketball court has been rated one of the best in Toronto for quality and competitive play, attracting famous visitors including Andrew Wiggins, Adam Sandler, and Justin Timberlake.
Today, the Waterfront Neighbourhood Centre has grown exponentially and had one of its most successful years on record in 2025 with the following highlights.
- 70,901 hours of service
- 377 programs and rentals
- 308,998 visitors
- 225 free programs and 282 additional partner programs
- 713 corporate and community volunteers who provided 13,449 hours of service
Currently, WNC delivers programs across seven categories: pre-school, children, youth, family, adult, senior, and community development, ensuring there is something for every resident at every stage of life. From PEEP and Summer Daze Camp to pickleball, a free music recording studio, Seniors Got Talent, and a bi-weekly clothing bank, WNC offers far more than most waterfront residents realize.
“The Centre has been my second home. It’s a foundation of good values, helping to create a caring, respectful community that has reflected on my children and grandchildren’s lives,” said Ana, a long-time WNC member.
To mark 35 years, WNC has introduced a new 35th anniversary logo, is planning a celebration in June 2027 and is doubling down on its commitment to reach the thousands of new residents arriving on the waterfront each year.
