FIFA World Cup Canada tour includes Northwestern Ontario

Kenora is one of just 34 communities across the country chosen to participate.

KENORA — When FIFA asked communities across the country if they were interested in participating in celebrations related to the upcoming World Cup of soccer, Kenora put up its hand.

The city ended up being the only town in Northwestern Ontario on a list of 34 communities where special activities will be held to mark Canada’s involvement as a co-host for the biggest single sporting event in the world.

FIFA calls it Canada Celebrates the FIFA World Cup 2026.

“Kenora is excited to be one of the host communities for Canada Celebrates,” said Josh Nelson, tourism development officer for the City of Kenora. “We plan to explore and celebrate this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.”

Nelson said spectators can expect to enjoy live match viewings on large screens, cultural programming, and musical performances.

As well, he said, “There’s going to be some interactive football-themed zones, family-friendly activities, local food, and so on. Basically, each stop is going to have a consistent experience. However, communities are allowed to add their own flair, so we’ll be doing that too.”

The Canada Celebrates FIFA World Cup 2026 community stops begin in Newfoundland on June 1 and in Yukon on June 5, and finish in southern Ontario in mid-July.

In Kenora, the event takes place on July 7.

The tournament takes place in Canada, the US and Mexico from June 11 to July 19.

As a Canadian, it’s incredibly meaningful to bring a taste of the FIFA World Cup 2026 to communities across the country and ensure Canadian residents can be part of this historic moment,” said Vittorio Montagliani, FIFA vice-president and Concacaf (Confederation of North, Central America and Caribbean Assocation Football) president.

Beyond hosting matches in Toronto and Vancouver, this FIFA World Cup will create a legacy for football in this country — inspiring the next generation and growing the game for years to come. We look forward to visiting all 34 communities as part of this global celebration.”

The City of Thunder Bay did not apply to participate in the tour because the event does not align with its emphasis on supporting events that draw visitors to the city.

However, a spokesperson said the city will support Canada’s team in a variety of ways at its visitor centres.
