From Espionage to the Stage: Meet Secret Service Playwright Ephraim Ellis

This summer, Lighthouse Festival is proud to present the World Premiere of Secret Service, a fast-paced new comedy by Canadian playwright and performer Ephraim Ellis.

Set inside Toronto’s swankiest Italian restaurant, Secret Service follows a covert team of international spies attempting to pull off a top-secret operation while posing as restaurant staff. But when an overly enthusiastic new waiter accidentally stumbles into the middle of the mission, things quickly spiral into hilarious chaos.

Known for his work in television, film, and theatre, Ephraim Ellis brings a sharp comedic voice and a love of larger-than-life storytelling to this wildly entertaining new production. Beneath the undercover antics and laugh-out-loud moments, Secret Service is also a surprisingly heartfelt story about identity, confidence, and finding where you belong.

“This is the first play I’ve written that maintains the classical Aristotelian unities of space and time – meaning, it takes place in one location, in ninety minutes of real time, with no scene breaks or time jumps or changes in location. It really helps raise the stakes! It was a real challenge, so much fun to write, and very satisfying to be able to finally have a legitimate chance to use the phrase ‘classical Aristotelian unities’ in conversation. Take that, English degree!”

We recently chatted with Ephraim to learn more about the inspiration behind Secret Service, his creative process, and what audiences can expect from this exciting new world premiere.
