Sudbury’s Italian Festival returns for three days of food, music and culture
The 54th Società Caruso Italian Festival runs July 3 to 5 at the Caruso Club in Greater Sudbury, with regional food displays, live entertainment, family programming and free admission
The 54th Società Caruso Italian Festival returns to the Caruso Club from July 3 to 5 for a three-day celebration of Italian culture, cuisine and community in Greater Sudbury.
Hosted by Società Caruso, the festival has run for more than five decades and continues to mark the role Italians and Italian-Canadians have played in shaping the region. This year’s festival draws inspiration from the recent UNESCO recognition of Italian cuisine as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, with displays and cultural experiences that explore regional foods, ingredients and culinary traditions from across Italy.
The weekend includes authentic Italian food and beverages, live music and entertainment, cultural exhibits, family activities and children’s programming, including PESCA. The program also includes contests such as spaghetti eating, hot pepper and soppressatta competitions, along with games, porchetta bingo and community gatherings.
Visitors can also learn about Italy’s 20 regions while taking in the festival atmosphere under the tent.
The festival also supports ongoing cultural work in the community. Proceeds help fund Società Caruso’s cultural programming, educational initiatives, community events and efforts to preserve Italian heritage in Greater Sudbury. Volunteers and community partners also play a central role in keeping the festival going year after year.
“For many of us, Italian culture is rooted in memories, gathering around the table, learning family recipes, celebrating milestones and spending time with the people we love. The Italian Festival is our opportunity to share those traditions with the entire community.
“Italian cuisine has recently been recognized by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, and this year’s festival is about celebrating what that truly means. It’s not just about the food, it’s about the traditions, stories and connections that are passed from one generation to the next.
“We want visitors to leave having enjoyed a great meal, but also having learned something new, made a memory, and felt a little closer to the culture that has helped shape our community for generations,” said Amanda Casagrande, director of entertainment and Società Caruso Italian Festival chair.
The festival runs July 3 from 4:30 to 11 p.m., July 4 from noon to 11 p.m. and July 5 from noon to 8 p.m. at the Caruso Club, 385 Haig St., Sudbury.
Admission is free all weekend. Food and drink tickets will be available on site.
