The Secret of the Alton Mill!
We were standing outside, surrounded by four walls. Only the walls could be seen. The sound of an unseen wind howled above us. The world seemed to stop, only the sound of the forceful wind could be heard, but not felt. We decided to go back inside, out of the roaring sound. We couldn’t understand what we had just experienced. It was a puzzle not to be understood until we explored the outside grounds. Just as we rounded the back of the building, the mystery was solved. The roaring “wind” sound was not wind, but the rushing sound of water hurtling over unseen fall. The secret of the Mill (Alton) was solved!

Alton Mill Arts Centre History
(Interview with Martin Kourpie, General Manager)
Ontario Visited spent time with Alton Mill Arts Centre’s General Manager, Martin Kourpie, to bring you an inside look in our exclusive interview series. Here’s the scoop on the Mill’s unique history.
It all began in 1881 when Alton Mill operated as a wool mill, though with a special twist. Unlike most wool mills, Alton produced fleece-lined long underwear, providing an extra layer of comfort between the rough wool and the skin. Back then, underwear made from regular wool was notoriously itchy and uncomfortable, unless you had exceptionally tough skin! This fleece lining became a luxury and a must-have for many, making the Mill’s underwear popular across Canada. Alton Mill operated as a thriving wool mill until about 1934, leaving a lasting mark on Canadian textile history.
After its time as a wool mill, the Alton Mill took on a new life as a balloon factory. It produced all kinds of balloons, from children’s toys to Walt Disney character balloons, including favorites like Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck. The factory even expanded its product line to include latex gloves and prophylactics (which became legal in Canada in 1934).
The Mill’s rich history doesn’t end there. In the late 1980s, it was acquired by a bottling company, though they didn’t manufacture on-site and mainly used it as a warehouse. Unfortunately, it soon fell into disrepair. That’s when Martin’s partners, Jeremy and Jordan Grant, saw its potential. Their father had purchased the building as a side project, and they saw an opportunity to restore and reimagine it.
Mill Restoration
From ruin to a multi-award-winning arts centre, the Alton Mill Arts Centre has been recognized as one of the most beautiful art centers in Canada, including acknowledgment by The Globe and Mail.
When the Grant family took on the project, the building was literally in ruins, the floors had collapsed, and from the basement, you could look up and see the clear blue sky. The electrical wiring and copper had been stripped out, leaving it in a state of decay. Determined to bring it back to life, they embarked on a seven-year restoration journey, using traditional building methods to honor its original construction. Architect Sheena Sharp, a specialist in historical buildings, came out of retirement to lead the project. Today, thanks to this meticulous restoration, the Alton Mill Arts Centre stands proudly as a celebrated landmark, admired by visitors from all over.
