CAPITOL THEATRE HEARTBREAK HITS

It was a cold, blustery February evening when Joanne and I set out for the Capitol Theatre to catch the lates presentation in their Billboard In Concert series – Heartbreak Hits.

There’s something about the human condition that often makes us drawn to the sadder side, particularly when it comes to entertainment. The songs performed were all big hits, seeming to prove the theory.

Even if there’s a song you don’t usually enjoy, the right performance can alter the feel. I found that to be the case during this show which opened with three dynamic young singers from Toronto gracing the stage. Backed by a terrific four-piece band under the direction of Jeff Newberry, they took us through some of the best-loved songs about heartbreak and loneliness recorded over the last several decades.  One can hear the desperation in Dolly Parton’s “Jolene”, the anger in Linda Ronstadt’s “You’re No Good”, the barely-veiled sarcasm in Jann Arden’s “Insensitive” to cite just a few examples.

There also were two guest appearances by the duo of Jeanne Truax and Nicholas Campbell, both former emerging artist winners at the Peterborough Folk Festival. They recaptured some of the classic love-lost tunes such as Roy Orbison’s “Crying”, the Everlys “Cathy’s Clown” and Gordon Lightfoot’s unforgettable “If You Could Read My Mind”.

The arrangements of these songs truly evoked the mood without becoming too depressing.  Best of all, the entire presentation was built and developed in the Port Hope area. Congratulations to all those who worked together to bring it to life.

Regardless of where you land on the relationship spectrum, this show will touch your heart in many ways.
