Bobcaygeon theatre company offers spotlight to community

Aspiring thespians of all ages invited to audition for two unique opportunities to take the Globus Theatre stage this fall.

Globus Theatre has queued up two great opportunities for the community to flex their thespian mettle this fall.

Auditions for the troupe’s annual holiday panto “Jack and the Beanstalk” take place Oct. 5 and 6 with an information and placement session for the newly created Bobcaygeon Sound Collective on Oct. 6.

The Collective builds on the resounding success of the community choir formed for “Desperate to be Doris” which was part of Globus Theatre’s summer season. The new full community choir, along with smaller ensembles, will become a vibrant part of upcoming productions and beyond. Music director Kelly Burrows will be assisted by John Kintare and Carly Poole in building this exciting local opportunity for people that love to sing.

We were absolutely blown away by the enthusiasm, dedication, and joy the community choir brought to ‘Desperate to be Doris’. It became clear that this was the beginning of something special,” explained Globus Theatre artistic director Sarah Quick in a press release. “The Bobcaygeon Sound Collective will give singers an ongoing opportunity to connect with each other and with audiences, creating memories and friendships through music.

The Bobcaygeon Sound Collective aims to be an ongoing community singing ensemble that will be featured in Globus productions and at community events around Bobcaygeon.

Starting Oct. 13, rehearsals will take place Monday evenings from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Aspira Kawartha Lakes Retirement Living which is also hosting Monday’s information session running from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. All ages are welcome.

This is a collective — so whether you’re a seasoned chorister or brand new to singing, there will be a place for you,” added Quick.

Auditions for “Jack and the Beanstalk,” Globus’ traditional holiday panto running this year from Dec. 3 to 17 are open to young performers aged six and up who are eager to be part of this magical production.

Panto at Globus has become a holiday tradition, and every year we’re amazed by the creativity, confidence, and joy that young performers bring to the stage,” said Quick who annually lends her playwriting talents to scribing each production to have a decidedly local flavour.

“‘Jack and the Beanstalk’ is a story full of fun and mischief, and we can’t wait to see new and returning faces join us in creating the magic.”

The panto offers a wonderful opportunity for youngsters and budding actors to work alongside professional actors and learn every step of bringing a story from page to stage. No experience is necessary, though priority in casting will be given to students of Globus Theatre’s School of Dramatic Art (SOD). Roles may be double cast, and performances will include both school-day matinees and public evening shows.

Auditions run from 5 to 6 p.m. for those ages six to 11 and 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. for those 12 and older, both dates, at the 2300 Pigeon Lake Rd. theatre. Auditionees are asked to prepare a one- to two-minute monologue, either read or memorized, from a book, play or original piece. Individuals must stay for the full hour. Parents are strongly encouraged to remain during the session.

In addition to performers, Globus welcomes anyone interested in working behind the scenes; painting scenery, building sets, sewing costumes, finding props, doing make-up or assisting in other ways.
