History of the Brigden Fair
The Brigden Fair, organized by the Moore Agricultural Society, has been a cherished tradition in Brigden, Ontario, since its inception in 1850. Celebrating over 170 years of community spirit and agricultural heritage, the fair has evolved into a vibrant event that brings together residents and visitors alike.
Early Beginnings
The inaugural Brigden Fair took place in 1850 at Riley’s Tavern, featuring only cattle and horses. In its early years, the fair rotated among various locations within Moore Township, including Mooretown, Corunna, and Courtright. This itinerant nature continued until 1889, when the fair found a permanent home in Brigden.
Establishment in Brigden
In 1889, a group of local stakeholders formed a company to purchase and develop dedicated fairgrounds in Brigden. They acquired 15 acres of land, enclosed it with a fence, and constructed necessary facilities for exhibitions. The first fair at this permanent location was held that same year. In 1915, the Moore Agricultural Society purchased the grounds, ensuring the fair’s continuity and growth.
Growth and Evolution
Over the decades, the Brigden Fair expanded to include a diverse array of events and attractions. Traditional agricultural exhibits remained central, featuring livestock shows, homecraft competitions, and produce displays. To cater to broader interests, the fair incorporated midway rides, live entertainment, children’s activities, and various competitions, ensuring enjoyment for attendees of all ages.
Cultural Significance
The fairgrounds serve as a hub for community engagement during the event. The fair not only celebrates agricultural achievements but also highlights local talents through various exhibits and competitions. Themes introduced in recent years add a festive atmosphere and inspire creative displays, further enriching the fair’s cultural significance.
