History of the Aylmer Fair

The Aylmer Fair, organized by the Aylmer & East Elgin Agricultural Society, is one of Ontario’s oldest agricultural fairs, with a history dating back to 1846. Initially known as the Malahide Agricultural Society until 1860, the fair began as an annual exhibition showcasing agriculture and livestock to the local community.

Over its early decades, the fair experienced significant growth. From a modest number of exhibits in the 1850s, it expanded to over 1,700 exhibits by 1876. The event also evolved from a single afternoon to a two-day affair, with society membership exceeding 200 individuals. Notably, in 1865, women’s exhibitions were introduced, enriching the fair’s diversity and appeal.

Throughout its history, the Aylmer Fair has faced challenges, including funding issues and debates over its focus. In 1910, the fair was canceled due to concerns that extravagant attractions overshadowed its agricultural roots. However, by 1924, renewed leadership and increased government funding revitalized the event, leading to significant improvements over the subsequent years.

The fair played a supportive role during the 1940s war effort, allocating profits to organizations like the Red Cross. Celebrating its centennial in 1956, the Aylmer Fair entered a period of remarkable growth between 1945 and 1965, marked by increased attendance, expanded exhibits, and enhanced community participation. By 1977, the fair set a record with 47,000 attendees over its two-day span.

Today, the Aylmer Fair continues to thrive, offering a blend of agricultural showcases, family activities, and midway attractions, reflecting its enduring commitment to community engagement and the celebration of local heritage.
