Black History Month to feature cultural events and activities
City marks 30th anniversary of annual celebration
February is Black History Month, a time to honour the legacy, resilience, and achievements of Black communities. This year, the city is proud to mark the 30th anniversary of Black History Month in Canada with meaningful cultural events and activities.
City staff will celebrate with Drums et al, an interactive drumming experience exploring the rich traditions of African rhythms and their connection to community and humanity. Participants will engage in hand drumming, African chants, and a deeper understanding of the origins of drumming in Africa. The session uses rhythm as a metaphor for Ubuntu (humanity), reinforcing the importance of connection and teamwork.
The city is also pleased to partner with Rhythm & Blues Cambridge, a local grassroots organization, as they host community events throughout February to reflect on Black history and celebrate the contributions of Black communities in Cambridge and beyond.
Event Schedule:
Art From the Heart: Saturday, Feb. 15, 12 p.m. – Sunday, Feb. 16, 3 p.m.
Join local artist Alana Decker for Art From the Heart, a hands-on session where participants will design postcards reflecting their personal stories. These postcards will be displayed at Langs Community Health Centre, showcasing the creativity and strength of our community. No artistic experience is necessary, just bring your creativity and an open mind.
Black History Celebration: Saturday, Feb. 22, 11 a.m. – 4 p.m.
Celebrate the 30th anniversary of Black History Month with a day of storytelling, music, and community activities. Highlights include:

- A live performance by Panwaves, showcasing the vibrant sounds of the steel drum.
- Test your knowledge with a fun trivia game about Black history.
