History of the Burk’s Falls Fall Fair

The Burk’s Falls Fall Fair has been a cherished annual event in Burk’s Falls, Ontario, since its inception in October 1881. Organized by the Armour, Ryerson & Burk’s Falls Agricultural Society, the inaugural fair took place in a log schoolhouse on High Street, which also served as a church and meeting hall. Early competitions offered prizes of up to 25 cents for categories such as roots and garden vegetables, homemade soap, lard and butter, and ladies’ fancy work.

In the following years, the fair secured dedicated grounds and expanded its program to include events like horse races and drawing contests. Teamsters from local lumber firms would compete in driving and drawing contests, showcasing the strength and skill of their company teams. Buggy races and driving competitions featured classes for ladies, with one notable pioneer woman demonstrating her prowess by driving a pair of oxen. Baby shows also gained popularity during this period. (Burk’s Falls Fall Fair)

In 1949, new fairgrounds were developed, featuring enhanced facilities and a well-constructed racetrack. This development allowed for a more varied program, including commercial exhibits and displays aimed at engaging urban attendees. During the 75th anniversary, a log cabin was erected where pioneer directors, dressed in period costumes, demonstrated traditional spinning techniques, highlighting the fair’s commitment to preserving and showcasing local heritage.

Today, the Burk’s Falls Fall Fair continues to celebrate the region’s agricultural roots and community spirit, offering a blend of traditional competitions and modern attractions that honor its rich history. (Burk’s Falls Fall Fair)
