History of the Canadian Lakehead Exhibition
The Canadian Lakehead Exhibition (CLE), located in Thunder Bay, Ontario, has a rich history that dates back to the late 19th century. Originally established as The West Algoma Agricultural Society in 1890 by D.F. Burk and Burt Burris, the organization aimed to create a platform where rural and urban communities could come together to share knowledge and showcase their agricultural, livestock, arts, and crafts achievements.
Before settling into a permanent location, the exhibition was hosted at various sites, including the Port Arthur Waterfront, Casino Grounds, and the Port Arthur Armoury. In 1908, the fair found a permanent home at “Exhibition Park,” marking a significant milestone in its history.
In 1929, reflecting its growing prominence and the evolving identity of the region, the organization rebranded itself as the Canadian Lakehead Exhibition, a name that endures to this day.
Throughout the 20th century, the CLE expanded its facilities and offerings. Notably, in the 1950s and 1960s, the exhibition grounds featured a half-mile oval horse track that became a hub for stock car racing, managed by the Lakehead Stock Car Club.
The CLE has continually adapted to the changing times, incorporating modern amenities and attractions while preserving its historical essence. Today, it stands as a testament to the enduring community spirit of Thunder Bay, celebrating the region’s rich heritage and fostering unity among its residents.
