History of the Coe Hill Fair
The Coe Hill Fair is a beloved rural tradition with a history stretching back to the late 1800s. Organized by the Coe Hill Agricultural Society, the fair began as a small local event aimed at promoting agriculture and community togetherness in Hastings County, particularly serving the farming families in and around the hamlet of Coe Hill.
In its early years, the fair focused on livestock shows, homecrafts, field crops, and produce competitions, allowing local farmers and residents to share their skills, celebrate the harvest, and enjoy a bit of friendly competition. It quickly became one of the most anticipated social events in the area, marking the end of summer with a true sense of community pride.
Through the 20th century, the Coe Hill Fair expanded to include parades, children’s games, music, horse and pony shows, tractor pulls, and a wide variety of displays and exhibits. Like many rural fairs, it also became a gathering place for generations of families to connect, reminisce, and enjoy the vibrant atmosphere.
Despite its small-town size, the fair has always had a big heart. Thanks to the dedication of volunteers and the Agricultural Society, the Coe Hill Fair has remained one of Ontario’s longest-running rural fairs, offering a warm and welcoming experience for locals and visitors alike.
Today, the Coe Hill Fair continues to thrive, blending traditional agricultural roots with fun, family-friendly entertainment. It stands as a symbol of the enduring spirit of rural Ontario and the value of preserving community, culture, and country living.
