Curtain Call’s Newsies Hits Hamilton This August

Curtain Call Performing Arts Passion Project Company Brings Newsies to Hamilton This August

Elite Local Performers and Bold Direction Make This Family-Favourite Musical a Must-See

Hamilton, ON — Curtain Call Performing Arts Company is thrilled to announce its upcoming production of Newsies, presented through its Passion Project Company, running August 22–30, 2025 in Hamilton, Ontario.

With explosive choreography, heartfelt storytelling, and a powerful message about youth empowerment, Newsies promises to be a family-friendly summer theatre experience unlike any other. This production will feature a cast of just 18 elite performers, each bringing their own professional training and performance experience from across the Greater Hamilton and Toronto Area. These artists are not just actors; they are dancers, singers, and storytellers who bring intensity, nuance, and joy to every moment on stage.

What sets this production apart is the Passion Project Company’s commitment to artist-driven storytelling and high-caliber ensemble work. Unlike traditional large-scale stagings, this Newsies thrives on intimacy and collaboration, allowing each performer to shine and contribute to the heart of the show. From strike scenes filled with fiery urgency to tender character moments, the production captures both the spectacle and soul of this beloved musical.

The creative team, made up of some of the region’s finest emerging and established theatre artists includes: Danielle Viola (Director), known for her bold, community-rooted approach to youth and emerging artist theatre. Jacob Rushton (Vocal Director), whose musical direction brings depth and clarity to ensemble vocals and Emma Clarke and Moira Vaughan-Lee
(Choreographers), celebrated for crafting energetic, dynamic dance sequences that drive story as much as spectacle.

Set in turn-of-the-century New York, Newsies tells the story of Jack Kelly and a band of teenaged “newsies” who rise up against powerful newspaper publishers in a fight for justice. With rousing numbers like “Seize the Day,” “Carrying the Banner,” and “King of New York,” it’s a musical that continues to inspire audiences of all ages.

“This is a show about young people who use their voices and take action to create change,” says Director Danielle Viola. “It’s empowering, uplifting, and deeply relevant—and it’s also a ton of fun. We’re incredibly proud of the talented cast and creative team bringing it to life right here in Hamilton.”

Newsies is the perfect way to wrap up your summer with family and friends, and an opportunity to support and celebrate the incredible local talent growing within our city’s vibrant arts community.
