History of the Donnybrook Fair

The Donnybrook Fair, held annually in Walsh, Ontario, is a longstanding community tradition that dates back to 1857. Organized by the Charlotteville Agricultural Society, the fair has been a cornerstone event in Norfolk County for over 160 years.

Origins and Naming

The fair’s name was inspired by an early settler who likened the local festivities to the spirited Donnybrook Fair in Dublin, Ireland. Established in 1857, the Donnybrook Fair in Walsh has been held every year since its inception, growing in size and quality over time.

Community Involvement

A hallmark of the Donnybrook Fair is its emphasis on youth participation. Children from local schools, including Walsh Public School and St. Michael’s School, as well as homeschooled students, are encouraged to enter their own artwork, crafts, and agriculture-related artifacts into competitions. These contests not only foster creativity and innovation but also offer monetary awards, encouraging children to save for future educational opportunities.

Signature Events

The fair features a variety of events and attractions that cater to all ages. One of the most popular events is the demolition derby, which has been a staple since 1973. Other activities include a baby show, kids’ costume contest, power wheels derby, car show, tug-of-war competitions, and a washer toss tournament.

Ongoing Traditions

Fundraising efforts for the fair are a year-round endeavor, involving events such as a Victoria Day brunch, an annual spring barbecue, and various raffles. These activities not only support the fair financially but also strengthen community bonds.

Present Day

Today, the Donnybrook Fair continues to thrive, drawing visitors from across the region. It stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of the community, blending historical traditions with contemporary attractions. The fair remains a highlight of the local calendar, embodying the values of hard work, community pride, and celebration of rural life.
