Durham Region celebrates Recreation and Parks Month with a passport adventure initiative

Whitby, Ontario – June is Recreation and Parks Month and Durham Region Health Department, in partnership with the Durham Region municipalities and Durham Tourism, are excited to offer a passport adventure initiative for the second year in a row, benefiting residents across the region.

The passport adventure returns this year with many familiar free events throughout the month of June including public swimming, yoga by the lake, Zumba classes, as well as new sports additions such as baseball, horseshoes, netball and rollerblading/skating. This initiative encourages residents to explore a variety of activities across Durham Region with the chance to win a new bike, a perfect way to explore the region’s scenic trails. Residents are encouraged to attend at least three free events across the region to qualify for the grand prize of a new bike. To download a digital copy of the passport visit durhamtourism.ca/RecAndParksMonth.

The theme of Recreation and Parks Month is, “Community Thrives Here”, which highlights the importance of recreation and parks in bringing communities together. Visiting parks and participating in recreational activities help people enhance their quality of life through the exploration of activities that support physical and mental well-being, while also fostering a healthier, stronger community.

Recreation and Parks Month is a wonderful opportunity for residents to connect with their community and embrace healthy, active living,” said Tara Wheeler, a public health nurse with Durham Region Health Department.

We’re thrilled to collaborate with local municipalities and Durham Tourism to promote a wide range of activities for everyone. Last year, many community members took part in the passport adventure, and we’re excited to offer even more this year with several new events. Be sure to download your passport today.”
