History of the Expo Shawville Fair

The Shawville Fair, also known as Expo Shawville, is one of the longest-running and most celebrated agricultural fairs in Quebec, with a proud history dating back to 1856. Organized by the Shawville Agricultural Society, the fair was established to promote agriculture, livestock breeding, and rural community life in the Pontiac region, particularly among the English-speaking farming communities of Western Quebec.

In its early years, the fair focused on livestock competitions, homecraft displays, produce, and field crops, offering a platform for local farmers and rural families to exhibit their skills and learn from one another. It quickly became a major annual event in the area, drawing people from nearby Ontario as well as across Quebec.

Over time, the Shawville Fair evolved into a full-scale country fair, blending traditional agricultural elements with popular entertainment. It now features heavy and light horse shows, 4-H competitions, truck and tractor pulls, a demolition derby, homecraft exhibits, a midway, live music concerts, and children’s activities. Despite modern updates, it has always maintained a strong focus on youth involvement, agriculture, and community pride.

Held annually over Labour Day weekend, the fair has become one of the biggest fairs in Quebec’s Outaouais region, attracting thousands of visitors each year. Its blend of rural charm and big-stage entertainment makes it a unique and highly anticipated event.

With nearly 170 years of history, the Expo Shawville Fair remains a shining example of how tradition, community, and innovation can come together to create a truly special fair experience. It continues to celebrate the deep agricultural roots and vibrant spirit of the Pontiac region.
