History of the Kirkton Fall Fair

The Kirkton Fall Fair, a cherished tradition in Kirkton, Ontario, has been celebrating the region’s agricultural heritage and community spirit for over 150 years. Established in 1869 by the Blanshard Agricultural Society, the inaugural fair took place on October 13, 1869, on Alexander Kirk’s farm. This initial event featured 103 exhibitors with 397 entries, showcasing homegrown produce, homemade clothing, baked goods, and livestock. The fair concluded with a modest profit of $14.98, marking a successful beginning.

In 1882, the fair relocated to Beatrice Park, owned by Samuel Doupe, before moving in 1889 to its current location. The Kirkton Agricultural Society purchased eight acres from John McGregor for $1,200 to accommodate the fair’s expansion. Initially, both spring and fall fairs were held annually until 1893, when the spring fair was discontinued. By the 1880s, the fall fair had become a two-day event in late September or early October, traditionally held on weekdays to facilitate school participation. In 1969, the fair was first held on a weekend, and since 1971, it has been scheduled for the second weekend of September. The event expanded to a three-day format in 1985, reflecting its growing popularity.

Throughout its history, the Kirkton Fall Fair has showcased a variety of attractions, including livestock shows, horse shows, 4-H club exhibitions, homecraft displays, parades, and unique events like donkey baseball and farmer’s Olympics. The fair continues to evolve, blending traditional agricultural showcases with modern entertainment, fostering a strong sense of community and celebrating Kirkton’s rich rural heritage.
