Lace up for 14th Annual Troy’s Trail Spirit Walk

Event takes place June 14 at 11 a.m. at the Art Gallery of Algoma

You’re invited to put on those walking shoes and join the 14th Annual Troy’s Trail Spirit Walk on June 14.

This event, which takes place during Hydrocephalus and Spina Bifida Awareness Month, starts at 11 a.m. at the Art Gallery of Algoma.

Troy’s Trail SSM Annual walk brings people together in Sault Ste. Marie to create awareness and generate much needed funds for Hydrocephalus Canada to continue to deliver programs and services through research, awareness, care, and advocacy to help those individuals live their best life possible.

To date, this walk has raised over $30,000.

For more information, see the press release below.

Hydrocephalus is caused by an abnormal accumulation of cerebral spinal fluid, resulting in pressure on the brain. The most common treatment for this condition is brain surgery where a shunt is implanted to help drain the fluid. A shunt is NOT a cure, and there are often complications of shunt failures leading to multiple brain surgeries over a patient’s lifetime.

Spina Bifida is a condition that affects the spine at birth. It is a neural tube birth defect caused by the incomplete development of the spine during the early months of pregnancy.

The impact and challenges on a person with these conditions can range from mild to severe. Complications can include issues with paralysis, mobility, bowel and bladder function, vision, memory, and learning challenges.

Both hydrocephalus and spina bifida are life altering, life threatening conditions to which there is NO CURE!

Troy was diagnosed with hydrocephalus in 1994 at the age of 28. To date he has undergone 10 brain surgeries, and 4 seizures.

Troy’s Trail, a support group created in 2012 was inspired by Hydrocephalus Canada. Having no local support group, Troy and Annette Chandler decided to make it their mission to create a supportive community here in Sault Ste. Marie in support of all individuals and families whose lives have been impacted with hydrocephalus and spina bifida.

Troy and Annette Chandler, the community contacts for Sault Ste. Marie and Northern Ontario on behalf of Hydrocephalus Canada, have been providing information about hydrocephalus and spina bifida and sharing information to individuals with these conditions.  These connections have also helped them stay informed and help others, too.

For the past 14 years, Troy and his wife Annette have been hosting the annual fundraiser “Troy’s Trail Spirit Walk” in honour of Hydrocephalus and Spina Bifida Awareness Month.

Troy’s Trail SSM Annual walk is one of several community walks held across Canada in the month of June. The annual event brings people together in Sault Ste. Marie to create awareness and generate much needed funds for Hydrocephalus Canada to continue to deliver programs and services through research, awareness, care, and advocacy to help those individuals live their best life possible.

This inspiring community event has raised more than $30,000 to support the programs and services the association provides to people locally and across the country.

It is with the help and generosity of families, friends, and the local businesses who continue to provide donations that leads to the success of these events.
