History of the Marmora Fair

The Marmora Fair has a rich history dating back to the early 20th century, serving as a cornerstone event for the community of Marmora, Ontario. Established to celebrate and promote local agriculture, craftsmanship, and community spirit, the fair has evolved over the decades while maintaining its traditional roots.

In its early years, the fair featured horse and buggy races, reflecting the transportation modes of the time. These races were not only a form of entertainment but also a demonstration of the skills and endurance of both horses and drivers. An anecdote from 1907 recounts how a horse, familiar with its usual spot near a pine tree by the track, inadvertently caused a buggy accident during a race, highlighting the close bond between the animals and their routines.

Beyond races, the fairgrounds became a hub for various community activities, including lacrosse, hardball, and softball games. A bandstand erected in the 1920s hosted musical performances, adding to the festive atmosphere. Church picnics, parades, and field days were also integral to the fair’s history, making the grounds a focal point for communal gatherings and celebrations.

Over the years, the Marmora Fair has adapted to changing times, introducing new events and attractions while preserving its traditional charm. Today, it continues to be a testament to the enduring community spirit of Marmora, bringing together residents and visitors alike to celebrate the region’s rich agricultural heritage and local talents.
