History of the Paris Fair

The Paris Fair, held annually in Paris, Ontario, is one of the most well-known and historic fall fairs in southwestern Ontario. Organized by the Brant Agricultural Society, the fair traces its roots back to 1858, when local farmers and community members came together to promote agricultural awareness, rural traditions, and community pride.

The first fairs were modest gatherings showcasing livestock, produce, home baking, needlework, and other agricultural and domestic skills, reflecting the strong farming heritage of Brant County. As interest grew, so did the fair, evolving into a larger event that attracted people from surrounding towns and rural areas.

By the early 20th century, the Paris Fair had become a key event in the region, expanding to include horse shows, 4-H competitions, homecraft exhibits, games, rides, live music, and special events. The fairgrounds became a hub for agricultural education and entertainment, and that tradition continues today.

Held every Labour Day weekend, the Paris Fair now draws tens of thousands of visitors over five days. It features a midway, demolition derby, livestock shows, truck and tractor pulls, a baby show, live concerts, and an extensive vendor market, all while maintaining its agricultural roots.

Thanks to the dedication of the Brant Agricultural Society and countless volunteers over the decades, the Paris Fair has thrived for over 165 years, becoming both a community celebration and a showcase for rural excellence. It remains one of the last true country fairs that manages to combine big-fair excitement with small-town charm, earning its reputation as a must-visit event in Ontario’s fair season.
