History of the Petrolia and Enniskillen Fall Fair

The Petrolia and Enniskillen Fall Fair has been a cherished tradition in Petrolia, Ontario, since its inception in 1876. Established by the Enniskillen Agricultural Society, the fair was designed to promote agricultural excellence and community engagement within Enniskillen Township. By 1888, the society had acquired 3.5 acres of land within the town limits, erected buildings, and commenced hosting the annual fall fair on these designated agricultural grounds.

Over the years, the fair has evolved to encompass a diverse array of events and attractions, including livestock exhibitions, agricultural displays, homecraft competitions, midway rides, and live entertainment. These activities celebrate the region’s rich agricultural heritage and foster a strong sense of community among residents and visitors alike.

Today, the fair continues to be organized by the Petrolia & Enniskillen Agricultural Society, which maintains ownership of the fairgrounds, now known as Greenwood Park and Morrison Field. These grounds are utilized year-round for various community activities, including soccer, softball, and baseball, through a collaborative agreement with the Town of Petrolia, which assists in their upkeep. Additionally, the fairgrounds house the Petrolia Lions Hall and Pavilion, further serving as a hub for local events and gatherings.

The Petrolia and Enniskillen Fall Fair stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of the community, celebrating over a century of agricultural traditions and communal festivities.
