History of the Porquis Fall Fair
The Porquis Fall Fair, held in the small community of Porquis Junction in Northern Ontario, has a long-standing tradition of celebrating rural life, agriculture, and community spirit. The fair is organized by the Porquis Agricultural Society, which was established in the early 20th century, with roots believed to date back to the 1920s.
Created to promote and support the agricultural lifestyle of the Timiskaming District, the Porquis Fall Fair originally focused on livestock exhibitions, crop displays, home baking, preserves, and handicrafts, giving local farmers and residents a chance to share their skills and celebrate the harvest season. It also served as a social gathering point in a region where rural isolation could be common, especially in earlier decades.
Over time, the fair expanded to include children’s games, pet shows, horse and pony events, local entertainment, and community contests, while still maintaining its agricultural focus. School participation has long been a part of the fair, with youth contributing art, crafts, and produce entries. Community involvement has always been central to the fair’s success, with dedicated volunteers keeping the tradition alive year after year.
Today, the Porquis Fall Fair continues to showcase the strength and resilience of small northern communities. Though more modest than some larger Southern Ontario fairs, it offers a warm, welcoming environment where heritage, farming, family fun, and local pride take centre stage.
With nearly a century of history, the Porquis Fall Fair remains a treasured part of Northeastern Ontario’s agricultural landscape — a fair where the heart of the community is always on display.
