Regional Chair statement honours Black History Month; Regional event to spotlight community leaders
Whitby, Ontario – The following statement is being issued on behalf of John Henry, Regional Chair and Chief Executive Officer for The Regional Municipality of Durham:
“Each February, we recognize Black History Month, a time to celebrate diversity, recognize the outstanding achievements of Black Canadians and honour the impact and presence of Black communities. It is also an opportunity to re-affirm our individual and collective responsibility to dismantle oppressive systemic barriers and address anti-Black racism.
On February 5, in collaboration with local municipalities and community partners, we will host a celebration of champions who are advocating for and advancing the well-being of Black communities. The event at the Audley Recreation Centre in Ajax will feature a keynote speaker, inspiring performances and awards. I encourage you to attend the Region’s Black History Month celebration, Together We Rise Durham: Resistance, Resilience, Possibility.
During Black History Month and beyond, let’s listen to the voices and stories of Black communities to gain a deeper understanding of lived experiences and the barriers they continue to face. Let’s reflect on our conscious and unconscious biases, promote allyship in the fight against anti-Black racism and celebrate Durham’s rich diversity.
By doing so, we can build a region that is not only more welcoming and inclusive, but one where everyone feels valued and supported.”
