History of the Shedden Fair

The Shedden Fair, also known as the Shedden Agricultural Fair, has a deep-rooted history that reflects the agricultural pride and close-knit spirit of Elgin County. It was first organized by the Shedden Agricultural Society, which was formed in 1857, making the fair one of Ontario’s longstanding rural traditions.

In its early days, the Shedden Fair focused on promoting agriculture, livestock breeding, and rural craftsmanship, offering competitions and exhibitions for everything from cattle and crops to baking, canning, quilting, and needlework. It served as a vital gathering point for farmers and families across Southwold Township and beyond, particularly during the fall harvest season.

Throughout the decades, the fair expanded to include school displays, 4-H Club events, pet shows, parades, horse and tractor pulls, and children’s entertainment, while still maintaining a strong emphasis on agricultural education and excellence. The fair has always highlighted local talent and creativity through its popular homecraft exhibits and youth competitions.

Held annually at the Shedden Fairgrounds, the event remains a highlight of the community calendar. Generations of families have taken part—whether entering livestock, performing on stage, volunteering, or simply enjoying the festivities.

Today, with over 165 years of history, the Shedden Fair continues to thrive as a celebration of rural life, tradition, and community connection. Organized by dedicated volunteers, the fair remains a shining example of how small-town Ontario honours its agricultural roots while fostering pride, fun, and fellowship across all ages.
