Ontario Visited’s Steel Magnolias Review
By Kevin and Joanne Andrade, Senior Event Correspondents
If you are looking for a place to go to celebrate a special occasion, The Capitol Theatre, nestled in the heart of Port Hope is a great choice. As one of the few surviving atmospheric theatres, it offers a true charm. While it may be located in small town Ontario, it can boast truly big city production, from the sets to the costumes and effects to a fair number of seasoned performers. We were pleased to do a Steel Magnolias Review.
Ontario Visited takes the evening to see their production of Steel Magnolias. This stage version of the much-loved story is directed by Courtney Ch’ng Lancaster. Out of the six-member all woman cast, four are making their debut at the Capitol.
Set in the 1980’s, Steel Magnolias is a story based on female friendships, southern charm and hair. Set entirely in Truvy Jones’ hair salon, the sharp and witty dialogue portrays a vast range of emotions that will have you laugh and maybe even cry. Each character is unique but as an ensemble they depict the essence of true caring amongst these women in a small Louisiana town. (Steel Magnolias Review)
Unlike some productions, action is minimal as the dialogue carries the story, revealing the concerns, the joys, the pains these women are experiencing in their lives. The exchanges between them and the display of emotions is very believable and draws the audience in to their group. (Steel Magnolias Review)
Admittedly my initial feeling was that the males in attendance would number in the single digits but discovered quite a few were part of the full house. While the entire cast and practically the whole production team are female, they have assembled a show that will delight all, in particular the zingers and rants delivered by each character throughout. (Steel Magnolias Review)
As an added bonus, in the lobby during intermission, visitors could sit in one of the genuine old-fashioned hair stylist chairs and have some fun with the mini props and signs featuring some of the lines from the play. (Steel Magnolias Review)
Also, special thanks go out to the sponsor Atelier on John Ltd design and accessibility sponsor Milly’s Market Port Hope. Do yourself and maybe someone else a favour and grab a seat and maybe a tissue for Steel Magnolias at the Capitol Theatre which runs until August 3rd. (Steel Magnolias Review)
