History of the Teeswater Fair
Teeswater was incorporated as a village in 1875. The Teeswater Fair started some 20 years earlier in 1855. It was originally called the Culross Township Exhibition. The fairs were held in various places around town before our park and fairgrounds were purchased in 1896 for $1,500.00.
The Teeswater Fair, established in 1855, has a rich history as one of Ontario’s oldest rural fairs. Originally known as the Culross Township Exhibition, it predates the incorporation of Teeswater as a village in 1875
Over the years, the fair has evolved, reflecting the community’s agricultural roots and adapting to contemporary interests. In 1940, the fair’s grandstand, initially accommodating 1,000 spectators, was expanded to seat 4,000, indicating its growing popularity. By 1946, the fair’s prominence attracted special trains from Toronto, bringing attendees directly to Teeswater. The introduction of the tractor pull in 1973 added a new dimension to the fair’s attractions.
The Teeswater Agricultural Society, the organizing body behind the fair, has been instrumental in sustaining and enhancing this tradition. Their dedication ensures that each year’s fair not only honors the past but also incorporates new events and activities, offering a blend of time-honored customs and modern entertainment. The fair serves as a testament to Teeswater’s enduring community spirit and its commitment to celebrating agricultural heritage.
In recent years, the fair has continued to innovate. For instance, the 2023 fair introduced a family-friendly glow dance and a cornhole tournament, appealing to a broader audience. The fair also maintains traditional events such as livestock exhibitions, homecraft displays, baking and canning contests, and various entertainment options suitable for all ages.
The Teeswater Fair’s enduring presence highlights the community’s commitment to preserving and celebrating its rural culture, making it a cherished tradition in Teeswater and the surrounding regions.
