Directors’ notes

How much more time…?

I honestly can’t say how I would want to spend my last few minutes on earth in the face of global annihilation. I don’t know if anyone really could. Some people may think they know, but until confronted with the immensity of the reality of the situation, would any of us really know ourselves well enough. Who can say?

Two Minutes to Midnight explores this ultimate “what if” in the face of our social culture’s ever-growing distraction and distance from each other and ourselves, and at the heart of the play asks the question “How much more time are we gonna waste pretending everything’s okay?” For Jack and Tracy, truths are revealed and ignored as they strive for personal connection and oscillate between radical honesty and the perfect vacation. They take us on a very human roller coaster ride that is funny, sad and surprisingly hopeful.

In the early fall of 2024, I chose Two Minutes to Midnight for this season as a funny, sharp, satirical, but hypothetical, cautionary tale, an unlikely “what if” scenario. Today, I hope we can take a lesson from Jack and Tracy to stop pretending everything’s okay, to keep trying to connect through the distraction of our lives and still have a smile on our face. (Two Minutes to Midnight)

Show Synopsis

TWO MINUTES TO MIDNIGHT by Michael Ross Albert Directed by Carey Nicholson

Jack and Tracy really need a vacation, but everything at their all-inclusive tropical getaway has been a disappointment. It’s rained the entire trip, their social media influence hasn’t translated to real revenue yet, and an inbound nuclear missile might be about to annihilate them and everyone nearby. With the world– and their relationship– on the brink of collapse, the bickering couple stares down oblivion together, confronting the illusions that kept them together, and finding hope for their future in the chaos of imminent destruction.
