Fast-paced, hilarious and heartwarming…these are a few words to describe the Port Hope Capitol Theatre’s production of “Waitress”, based a book by Jessie Nelson with music and lyrics by Sara Bareilles. Immediately upon entering the theatre we felt special as they had literally rolled out the red carpet for this stellar performance.

“Waitress” features an all-Canadian cast, many of whom have played in major theatre productions at Radio City in New York, Mirvish in Toronto and the Stratford Festival. As well, some are acclaimed in film and television. The actors in “Waitress” are all well-cast and perfect for their characters. Their story unfolds with live music, song and dance.

“Waitress” is set in Joe’s Pie Shop where we meet Jenna, Becky and Dawn, three waitresses who are stuck with a unreasonable boss named Cal and their most demanding customer Joe who owns the shop.

Jenna, the main character who is known for her famous pies, finds herself in an unexpected condition which she deals with through the support of sisterhood love from Becky and Dawn. Jenna’s domineering husband Earl keeps her captive in a loveless marriage which causes Jenna to be driven into the arms of her handsome gynecologist Dr. Palmateer. The underlying story is about fear of breaking away from the familiar and finding the strength to step into a true path of change towards happiness.

The production unfolds with dynamic choreography, toe-tapping live music and incredible set changes and design. “Waitress” takes you through a rollercoaster of emotions with witty rapport to heart-wrenching scenes that brings the audience from uproarious laughter to tears.

This brilliantly produced show is on at the Capitol Theatre now through June 29. It is recommended for audiences aged 14 plus due to some of content, language and suggestive subject matter.
