Waterloo region selected to host 2026 Ontario Summer Games
The event was last hosted in Waterloo in 2002
One of the province’s largest sporting events is coming to Waterloo region.
The Ministry of Sport announced on Thursday morning the region will host the 2026 Ontario Summer Games.
The successful bid is backed by $1.6 million from the Ontario government.
“Our government is proud to support Waterloo region’s bid to host the 2026 Ontario Summer Games and provide Ontario’s athletes with the opportunity to compete with their peers from across the province,” Neil Lumsden, minister of sport, said in a press release.
“These Games will attract thousands of visitors, driving domestic tourism to the region, boosting the economy and showcasing the fantastic attractions found throughout the area.”
Approximately 4,000 participants, including athletes aged 12 to 18, coaches, managers and officials will pass through the region with an estimated economic impact of $6 million.
Upwards of 24 sports will be played, from baseball and lacrosse to soccer and the triathlon.
The organization Explore Waterloo Region will work directly with the city’s of Cambridge, Kitchener, Waterloo, Wilfrid Laurier University and the University of Waterloo to put on the Games
Waterloo last hosted the event in 2002.
“This is an exciting opportunity for us to demonstrate our ongoing commitment to fostering an inclusive, vibrant and thriving community through sports,” Cambridge Mayor Jan Liggett said.
“Welcoming the athletes, families and supporters of the Ontario Summer Games to our community for this provincial sporting event also allows us to continue growing our capacity as a large-scale sports tourism location of choice, positioning our cities and townships as a top destination for competitive sports that generate economic benefits and allow communities to collaborate.”
