History of the Wellesley Township Fall Fair

The Wellesley Township Fall Fair has a proud history that dates back to 1850, making it one of the longstanding community fairs in Ontario. It was established by the Wellesley Township Agricultural Society with the goal of promoting agriculture, education, and rural community spirit within the township and surrounding areas.

In its earliest years, the fair was a modest gathering of local farmers showcasing livestock, produce, home baking, and handicrafts, all essential aspects of rural life at the time. These exhibits were not just competitions—they were also ways for neighbours to learn from one another and celebrate the harvest season.

As the decades passed, the Wellesley Fair evolved to meet the changing needs and interests of the community. It began to feature 4-H Club competitions, school exhibits, horse shows, children’s games, live entertainment, and parades, all while maintaining a strong emphasis on agricultural education. The fair has also served as an important social event, bringing together generations of families each fall.

Throughout its history, the fair has been held in various locations across the township, including the villages of Wellesley and St. Clements. Today, it continues to take place in Wellesley Village, typically in early September, and remains a cherished local tradition.

Now celebrating over 170 years, the Wellesley Township Fall Fair continues to be a vibrant event that highlights the township’s rural roots while embracing new ideas and activities. With its welcoming atmosphere and deep community involvement, it proudly upholds the motto of many Ontario fairs: “Where tradition meets tomorrow.”
